SERVPRO image

It's summertime here at SERVPRO! And while we are happy to officially start the party, we also want everyone to stay safe while engaged in all the fun outdoor activities summer has to offer.  Grilling and backyard bonfires can be great, but if you don't stay safe it can turn in to a disaster. Stay fire safe this summer with these tips from FEMA, but IF you happen to scorch your pavilion a little, we can help to restore it.

  • Only use your grill outside
  • Keep it at least 3 feet from siding, deck rails, and eaves
  • Keep a 3 foot zone around your grill to protect your kids and pets
  • Never leave fires unattended, including: grills, fire pits, and patio torches
  • Clean your grill after each use. This will remove grease that can start a fire.

Tips for frying a Thanksgiving turkey

SERVPRO knows that the turkey is the most important part of the Thanksgiving meal. It is the centerpiece that brings the rest of the dinner together. And while we all agree that fried turkey is amazing, injuring yourself or damaging property isn't. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe while preparing that deep fried bird.

  • Find a flat area: This helps keep the pot from tipping over and helps keep the oil level even when cooking
  • Use proper tools: Take the turkey in and out of the oil with gloves and the lifter tool
  • Be Prepared! Have a fire extinguisher ready at all times!

If you do experience fire or smoke damage while cooking the Thanksgiving feast, call SERVPRO of Leavenworth and NW Wyandotte County, the fire cleanup professionals.

Fire/Soot Damage Clean Up

SERVPRO knows that when you have a fire in your home or business it is very difficult to deal with the aftermath. That is why the cleanup experts at SERVPRO are always here to help. Our fire damage restoration team has over 50 years of combined experience to help put your home or business back together as quickly as possible. One main concern after a fire is the damage from soot and smoke.

The soot from a fire damage can leave stains and nasty odors. One way SERVPRO restores fire-damaged materials is with a media blasting process using dry ice or sand. Media blasting helps remove odor-causing soot and saves money by restoring costly building materials, instead of replacing them. This is just one way SERVPRO can help in the restoration of your home or business after a fire.

Every Fire Starts the Same Way

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

Every Fire Starts the Same Way

Fires start in a lot of different places. They have many different causes, but scientifically speaking, they all start the same way.

It sounds like a bit of a riddle, but it’s true, and the fire tetrahedron is proof. This four-sided triangular shape shows us that all fires happen because the same four things all happen at once. Let’s take a look and see what we can learn.

The 4 Things a Fire Needs to Live

Fuel. Every fire has to happen to something—in other words, some object or material has to, as we would say, catch fire. This is what scientists call the fuel source—the thing fires eat away as they burn.

Heat. For any material to burn, it first has to reach a heat point at which it becomes adequately combustible. In other words, something cold won’t catch on fire until it gets warmed up.

Oxygen. Fires actually consume oxygen as they rage through an area, and the rapid oxidation process is a crucial element of combustion. It also depletes the air quality in areas with burning fires.

Chemical Chain Reaction. The chain reaction is the newest addition to what was once called the fire triangle. The indicator is that all fires must have the fuel, the flash-point-level heat and the oxidation process working together, continuously, in order to survive. If the chain reaction isn’t happening, there can be no fire.

Contact SERVPRO anytime for fast, thorough cleanup and recovery after a fire.

Fire damage can be costly, that's why we restore all we can. This is how we clean interior walls free from soot and smelly residue caused by fire.

  1. Clean the wall by applying the cleaning solution to a rag and work from the bottom of the wall to the top in 3 to 4 inch circles.
  2. Rinse the wall by applying the rinsing solution to the rag and work from the bottom of the wall to the top.
  3. Dry the wall by folding a towel in quarters and drying the cleaned area, rotating the towel as each area becomes damp.

Practicing Safety with Candles

While filling a room with candles looks very romantic it can also be dangerous if you are not careful! If you do light candles make sure they are away from curtains and other flammable objects. And if you have any pets make sure they are out of swatting distance.

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke:

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Leavenworth & NW Wyandotte County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Learn before you burn this fall and educate yourself on local rules and regulations for burning backyard debris. We all know fall is a great time for fire pits and friendly gatherings but make sure you are careful. Below are some tips to help you remain safe while using a fire pit.

Do not position a fire pit under a covered porch or low hanging tree branches.
Always place a fire pit on a non-flammable surface, such as patio blocks or concrete.
Do not put a fire pit on a wooden deck or directly on grass.

Staying safe during a fire

Did you know that SERVPRO of Leavenworth and NW Wyandotte County offers Continuing Education Courses in a variety of categories! Recently we held a course on Fire Safety and Best Practices at a local fire station.

Our technicians were allowed to build three test rooms on the fire station's campus and fill them with contents to resemble a living room, dining room, and bedroom.

After the lecture series on Fire Safety and Best Practices the fire fighters lit the rooms on fire one by one and the participants were able to observe what the progression of a fire looks like in real time.

After the fire fighters put out the controlled fire the participants were allowed to look up and close and observe what kind of fire damage SERVPRO of Leavenworth and NW Wyandotte County technicians see when we first arrive on site for a fire damage cleanup.

All in all the day was very informative. If you have any questions on fires and fire cleanup please contact us at 913-772-1818!

Recently SERVPRO of Leavenworth & NW Wyandotte County's Sales and Marketing Manager Paul Goode hit the road with other volunteers from the American Red Cross to help with their Sound the Alarm campaign.

About the Home Fire Campaign:

Every day, 7 people die in home fires and tragically, most victims die in homes that don’t have working smoke alarms. The Red Cross wants to do everything we can to prevent these needless tragedies - that’s why we launched our Home Fire Campaign. Volunteer participants work alongside fire departments and other local groups, canvassing at-risk neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms, educate families about fire prevention and safety, and fund-raise for this lifesaving mission.

In just four years, these efforts have saved hundreds of lives and made hundreds of thousands of households safer.
